OpenAI Shut Down Sora. What Now? (And Why It Might Be Good News)

Yesterday OpenAI announced it's shutting down the Sora app. Disney pulled out of a billion-dollar deal. What does this mean for us content creators? A lot more than you think.

What Exactly Happened?

On Tuesday, March 24, 2026, OpenAI announced it is shutting down the Sora app, the application that enabled creating and sharing videos on an AI-based social network. The app launched just six months ago, peaked at 3.3 million downloads in November, but declined to 1.1 million in February. In total, it generated only $2.1 million from in-app purchases.

But that's not all. Disney, which invested a billion dollars in a deal with OpenAI in December, announced it is pulling out of the agreement. The deal included access to 200+ characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. That's over.

Why Did They Shut Down?

The official reason: OpenAI is preparing for an IPO and wants to redirect expensive computing power from Sora to more profitable services like ChatGPT, coding and text generation. Simply put: generating AI videos is very expensive, and people didn't pay enough.

The real reason? The app became a deepfake social network. People created videos of real people in embarrassing situations, offensive content, and OpenAI couldn't control it. NPR, CNN, NBC and more reported on this extensively.

First, let's calm down: the Sora 2 model itself is NOT shutting down! It's still available through ChatGPT Plus and Pro. What's closing is the standalone app and social network.
